What if I’ve already written my book?

We meet you where you are at

This call works no matter what stage of the book writing and publishing process you’re at. Whether you have an idea for a book and you are looking to take the next steps to write it, or you’ve already written it and are looking to have an editor look over it. We take where you currently are and look at where you want to be, and then build a personalized roadmap for you to get there.

What if I already know I want to self-publish or traditional publish my book and I just have questions for how to go about it?

We personalize the call to fit your needs

If you would like to use the entire call to have your questions answered, we can do that.

If I purchase a package with you from the call, is what I paid for the call subtracted from that package?

Yes! If you decide to go with a package after the call, the call is free. Either way, you come out of the call with a clearer picture of how to go about reaching your publishing goals, so it’s a win-win!

How long is the call?

The call is scheduled to be 60-90 minutes, depending on the questions you have and the material we go through, and whether your call includes a tour through the Trello board for a service.

What is the tour through the Trello board?

If you are doing this call as part of a package, the call includes a tour through a Trello board that’s personalized to you, and is designed to be a resource for your learning as well as a way to have easy and unlimited access to me as we go through the package together. If you are interested in a specific package that Trello is a part of, I may demo the Trello board for you to better show you what exactly you will get from that package.

BOOK FOUNDATIONS
Why is setting up the foundations for a book important?

This work sets your book up for success upfront

Designing a book that works doesn’t start after you’ve already written the book. It starts at the beginning, during the planning phase. That’s exactly what book foundations are. Doing this work before you start writing gives you a strong foundation to write from, which in turn saves you time on revisions down the road. It will inform every decision you make when it comes down to writing. This is the work that’s least done in book writing, but also the most well-kept secret and the key to taking your book from good to great.

What happens if I don’t do this work?

You risk leaving out crucial story elements

Many writers start writing a book without knowing where it’ll take them. Others create detailed spreadsheets, pulling apart the plot in an effort to be in control of the tiniest detail; they often leave out what makes a story a story.

What makes a story a story?

A story at its core is about something that happens (the plot) and how that affects the protagonist to change (character arc), while making the point (the deeper level why of the book). This is true for both fiction and nonfiction (in nonfiction, the protagonist is the reader, in memoir, it’s the writer). Regardless of genre, story is about change. Including an arc of change is crucial to a book’s formation. It’s easy to forget that if we are not conscious of it.

Is Book Foundations right for me?

✔️Are you looking to avoid writing a full draft just to figure out what your book is about (and then multiple more drafts after that)?
✔️Are you open and receptive to feedback on how to improve?
✔️Do you understand that there is a lot more that goes into writing a book than simply writing it (such as planning and decison-making)?
✔️Are you looking to find out what makes a great story and learn how to apply it to your own writing?
✔️Are you willing to give time to this process to save time later?

If you answered yes to the above, then you are ready for Book Foundations work!

Who is the LITE version for?

If you need help on a specific story element

If you’ve been stuck for weeks or months on end, waiting for a light bulb to go off about how to proceed with the next chapter or scene, or if you keep going down writing craft book or course rabbit holes yet still struggle to apply what you learn in your own writing. Work through your issue with an expert who’s trained to help you through with targeted feedback and exercises. Draw on my knowledge and expertise to get yourself unstuck.

1-ON-1 BOOK COACHING
What is book coaching?

Working directly with a professional trained to show you how to apply craft to your writing

Working with a book coach 1-on-1 is the most efficient way to write a book because you gain clarity on what you want to say before writing multiple hundred pages and then having to potentially rewrite them. A trained professional guides you through the process, keeping you accountable with deadlines and routinely checking your work to make sure you don’t veer off course, and you can bounce ideas off of someone who is trained to help you make the best decisions for your book. Instant feedback on your pages means you can catch and fix plot holes and other issues early on.

What do I get with book coaching that I don’t get with editing?

Feedback on your pages in real time and accountability as you write

Editing is designed to be for after you have already written your manuscript, while coaching is for during.

✔️Accountability – Regular deadlines carefully designed not to overwhelm you, but also not to let you procrastinate.
✔️Real-Time Editorial Support – Professional feedback on your pages while you write, so you don’t have to consume all those craft classes and books anymore.
✔️Calls – Written feedback is useful, but can be misunderstood. Calls support the written feedback and help clarify anything that wasn’t clear.

Do I have to set the foundations for my book before beginning to write it?

I’m glad you asked, and I can’t recommend this enough!

Whether you decide to write on your own or with a book coach, I find doing the work to set the foundations for your book crucial to the process. Setting these foundations works as a preventative measure, nipping in the bud any potential issues that will arise as you write your book. For this reason, I have all writers who work with me to write their book through 1:1 Book Coaching fill out a mini Book Foundations Document to make sure they have this down.

I suggest you do the foundations work first if you haven’t already.

Check out BOOK FOUNDATIONS for more information about this

Is book coaching right for me?

✔️Are you serious about getting your story onto the page?
✔️Are you ready to challenge yourself and make the tough decisions that are involved in writing a great book?
✔️Do you want to write your book in the most efficient way?
✔️Are you willing to work hard and be open to honest feedback that may be hard to hear?

✔️Are you looking to avoid doing multiple revisions on your book after you write it?
✔️Do you want to stop spinning your wheels reading countless craft books or attending various courses on writing?
✔️Are you willing to give time to this process to save time later?

If you answered yes to the above, then you are ready for book coaching!

Who is book coaching NOT right for?

✔️If you are only looking for reassurance or confirmation and aren’t open to honest feedback that may be hard to hear
✔️If you’re only looking for copy editing or proofreading and you aren’t willing to put in the work or do a major overhaul if your story requires one

How long will it take to write my book?

The answer is, it depends…

Your results depend on the number of purchased deadlines and the state your project is in before starting. Writing a book is an incredibly complex undertaking and it will take you at least six months to write your first draft.

I have a book written and need to do revisions on it. Can I use book coaching for my book revision?

Yes! Book coaching is designed to work for both writing your book and for revising it as well.

I am writing a nonfiction book. What are some things a book coach can help me with for nonfiction?

Many nonfiction writers are experts in their field and very knowledgeable about the topic they seek to write about, but they are new to writing books. And that’s okay! We all have to start somewhere. On top of accountability and real-time editorial support, a book coach can offer you industry-specific knowledge and guidance on how to write a strong nonfiction book that appeals to your readers. We can also help you save time and avoid the common mistakes nonfiction writers tend to make. Think of a book coach as your own personal tutor for writing a book that gets picked up by both agents and readers.

Common pitfalls nonfiction writers tend to fall into:

✔️Writing in circles
✔️Not knowing how to structure your book, what to include, or what to leave out
✔️Questioning your own authority or if you have anything worthwhile to say after all
✔️Trying to put everything you know in your book
✔️Attempting to appeal to all people (not speaking directly to your specific audience)
✔️Jumping in to write your book too early without getting the foundations down first so you’re left scrambling later
✔️The point of your book changes in the middle while you write, so you keep going back to revise constantly

As a book coach, I work with you to help you avoid making these mistakes. Stop writing in circles, questioning if you have anything worthwhile to say (you do!), and trying to put everything you know in your book; streamline what you want your book to teach your readers. I help you clarify your book’s big idea, find its hook, and help you get it out into the world—and everything in between.

Can I use book coaching to write my book proposal?

Yes, for sure! Book coaching is designed to work for both writing your book and your book proposal as well.

See Pitch & Publish Services for more details about this.

What is Trello and how is it used in this service?

All 3 book coaching package levels use Trello to help manage our back-and-forth with the project. The package level you choose dictates how in-depth we go with accountability, resources, and project management. The Level 3 package is the most in-depth of all the packages, since it not only offers you editorial review of an unlimited number of pages, but also full unlimited VIP access to me through Trello. You get an extra level of accountability, craft resources, project management, and access to me that the other two levels don’t have.

Trello is a 5-in-1 in this case…

Trello is a useful project management tool that works for any type of project, workflow, or team. For this service, I have customized it to be used as a:

✔️Tracker – where I can mark your book’s progress and you can see how far along we are with writing your book and building its foundations
✔️Resource – where you can learn all the craft elements that go into writing a great book in real time as you apply them to your book
✔️️Checklist – where you can learn the steps involved in writing a great book and cross off each step once we complete them
✔️Guide & feedback hub – where we can easily upload documents to exchange pages and feedback
✔️Communication hub – where you can have full access to me between calls (if you chose Level 3) and reach me at any point along the way with any questions or concerns

As part of your book coaching package, you receive your very own private Trello workspace & board that only you and I have access to. Our initial call includes an in-depth walk-through of the Trello board where I show you how to use it, so don’t worry if you don’t have any experience with Trello yet!

What is Speech-To-Text Editing and how does it work?

Speak your book instead of typing written pages

I added the option of Speech-To-Text Editing to all my packages to make book writing and coaching more accessible to everyone who wants to write a book. My goal with these packages is to remove any barriers or blocks you have that prevent you from reaching your goals and dreams of writing a book now. When sending me your work, instead of typing up pages of your book draft, if you prefer, you can record a video or audio file and send that instead. This means you don’t have to type a single word. I convert the audio to written text, format it for you, and edit it as I would if you were sending me written pages.

This option works great if you:

✔️are a busy professional with limited time to spare for writing
✔️have ADHD, vision impairment, carpal tunnel, arthritis, injury, or any other challenge that makes it difficult to sit or stand and type at a computer
✔️tend to get eyestrain or headaches from staring at screens
✔️have young children and find it challenging to find time to sit down at a computer and type

Make sure the audio is clear when you are recording.

EDITORIAL SERVICES
What is the difference between a Manuscript Assessment/Evaluation and a Developmental Edit?

A Manuscript Evaluation is a big-picture, macro-level analysis, while a Developmental Edit analyzes the story at both the macro and micro level

A Manuscript Evaluation is a story analysis that thoroughly examines key elements of your story and its strengths and weaknesses. There are no in-line comments. A Developmental Edit is a thorough and comprehensive analysis of your story that will help you understand what is working, along with areas of improvement. It’s both a macro-level analysis of the overall story, and a micro-level examination of each story element separately, paired with in-line comments that help explain where in your manuscript the issues and strengths come across.

Which of the two is right for me?

Either is right for you if you…

✔️Have a finished draft you would like to improve but are not sure how to go about it
✔️Have been querying or pitching to agents and are either not hearing back from them or receiving rejections
✔️Are open and receptive to feedback and are looking to learn and grow as a writer
✔️Understand the value of professional feedback on your work

Developmental Editing is a better option if you…

✔️Don’t get overwhelmed with lengthy and elaborate feedback
✔️Would rather have someone point out every area of improvement at once rather than have to go through multiple rounds of revisions

Who is this level of editing NOT right for?

✔️If you are only looking for reassurance or confirmation and aren’t open to honest feedback that may be hard to hear
✔️If you’re only looking for copy editing or proofreading and you aren’t willing to put in the work or do a major overhaul if your story requires one

How long can I expect this service to take?

About 1-2 weeks, depending on the length of your manuscript

PITCH & PUBLISH SERVICES
What is a book proposal and do I need one?

The book proposal is for the nonfiction writer

The book proposal is the nonfiction book’s key to getting agent representation and publisher acceptance. Using the foundation we set for your book combined with the Book Proposal Document that adheres to the industry standard, we build a book proposal and polish it to a professional level. If you are writing a nonfiction book and would like to have it traditionally published, the book proposal is the key to landing an agent and publishing deal, not the book itself.

Is book proposal coaching right for me?

✔️Do you have an idea for a nonfiction book and would like to write a book proposal and build a solid plan for pitching to agents & publishers?
✔️Are not sure where to start with writing a book proposal and would like guidance with the process?
✔️Do you have a book proposal finished already and would like to work on revisions to polish it?
✔️Have you started pitching your book idea to agents but are only getting crickets, or the occasional “This isn’t what we are looking for“?

If you answered yes to one or more of these, then yes!

How long will it take to write my book proposal?

The answer is, it depends…

Your results depend on your proposed book and what book proposal elements you want to highlight on (some writers have a significant following they want to highlight, while others have done extensive research on the topic their book is about, which they include in the proposal). Though it takes most people about 1-6 months to develop a solid, polished proposal, it does vary.

I have a book proposal written and need to do revisions on it. Can I use book proposal coaching for my revision?

Yes, book proposal coaching is designed to work for both writing your proposal and for revising it as well.

What’s the difference between pitching and querying?

Pitching requires a polished book proposal, and if for Nonfiction

If you are writing a nonfiction book, you don’t need to have written the book to land an agent; this is because you are pitching the idea of the book to agents rather than the book itself. You write a book proposal and pitch that to agents. When the agent lands you a publishing deal, you get paid to write the actual book.

Querying requires a polished manuscript, and is for Fiction

If you are writing a fiction book, you need to have written the full book to land an agent, and you query that agent when you reach out to them. Agents representing fiction will ask that you send them a query letter along with a synopsis (your whole book condensed down to about 2 pages), and they will often ask for the first 10 pages or so of your manuscript. Agents will expect you to have written the entire book before querying to them, so if they like your initial query, they might either ask for more pages or for your full manuscript, so be prepared to have that on hand to send them as soon as possible.

What about Memoir? Both

Since Narrative Memoir is currently the hardest market to land agents in, since it’s now the hardest to sell, if you are serious about traditionally publishing a Memoir, the best way to go about it is to both write and polish the whole manuscript and write and polish a book proposal. This will show agents you are serious about and really believe in your book and have put the time and work into having a plan for it.

I work with writers of all three genres to get their pitch and query materials ready and build a solid plan for reaching out to agents.

What’s the benefit of having a pitch or querying strategy, and how can a book coach help with that?

I’m glad you asked, and I can’t recommend this enough!

It’s important to develop a strategy when pitching to agents to avoid unnecessary rejections. Having the support of a professional book coach not only saves you valuable time you would spend researching how to successfully pitch to agents and publishers, but it also saves you the heartache that comes with unnecessary rejections—as we all know, rejections are expected when it comes to submitting your work in this way; but unnecessary rejections can be avoided if you put your best face forward and make your submission the best it can be. This means doing the work and knowing the current standards in the industry, which are both things a professional book coach can help you with.

Another reason why I recommend working with a professional and having a solid strategy BEFORE you begin to pitch or query is because once an agent rejects your work, you cannot go back to them again. This means that if you get rejected by your favorite agents early on for reasons that could have been avoided (for example, you weren’t aware of some specific guideline they had), that’s it for that agent. Work with a professional trained in helping writers pitch and query to minimize the risk of that happening.

Is the Pitch/Query Plan right for me?

You don’t know where to start with pitching or querying to agents…

✔️Do you have a polished book proposal or manuscript that you are ready to pitch or query to agents and publishers but don’t know where to start?
✔️Do you want to avoid unnecessary rejections (or getting rejected by your favorite agents) and would like guidance on how to pitch strategically?
✔️Have you started pitching or querying to agents but are only getting crickets, or the occasional “This isn’t what we are looking for” or “I didn’t connect with your writing“?

…or you have some idea but would like guidance

✔️Do you have a list of some agents and publishers you like and would like to build a strategy around that?
✔️Do you have an opportunity to attend a writing conference where you know there will be agents and would like to develop a plan to pitch to them?

If you answered yes to one or more of these, then yes!

What if I don’t need everything that’s offered in one of the packages? Can I customize it?

Yes, if the package doesn’t fit your needs, we can work out a personalized package for you. For example, if you are interested in the MONTH-TO-MONTH PITCH/QUERY SUPPORT, we can work out a plan for how you would best be supported as you implement your pitch/query plan. Maybe you don’t need accountability, but you would like me to help you add more agents to your agent list. Fill out this intake form and let me know your specific needs and how I can best support you and we can go from there!

FULL SERVICE SELF-PUBLISHING
What is Full Service Self-Publishing?

When you know you want to self-publish a book, but you want someone to take care of it for you

I designed Full Service Self-Publishing to be a service for busy professionals, influencers, and writers who want to write and publish a book on their own terms. They come to me with a rough manuscript and I guide them through each step of the process to go from their first draft to finished, published book. I perform copy edits and proofreads until the book is polished, I format the book and design the interior to their liking, and I ask them what decisions they want to make for their book and make that a reality for them. I involve them in every decision or do it all for them, depending on their needs and preferences.

At the end of it all, we emerge with a finished book to their liking that’s entirely theirs, live and published, and available for purchase. I have helped many books get published this way, and continue to do so. I thoroughly enjoy the process of managing all the details and helping a writer through this whole process. You can check out all the books here on the package’s main page. You can look inside and take a peek at the interior formatting if you click on the book and go to their respective Amazon pages.

Feel free to watch the explainer video for it here.
Here is another video where I explain Full Service Self-Publishing in a bit more detail.

If you have a first draft you’d like to self-publish, I can make that a reality.

Is Full Service Self-Publishing right for me?

Whether you want to save time and have someone do it all for you…

✔️Do you know you want to self-publish your book but don’t want to deal with all the outsourcing and time involved with individually hiring expensive editors and designers?
✔️Do you just want to write and have someone else take care of the editing, formatting, and publishing process for you?
✔️Would you rather avoid being bogged down by research and the details involved in figuring out how to format your book?

…or you would like someone to guide you through the entire process

✔️Are you unsure about the publishing process – cover design, editing, blurb writing, interior formatting, or Amazon book distribution?
✔️Would you like to have your book published quickly, within a month, rather than it taking multiple months or even years?
✔️Would you like someone to manage the project and have it done for you ASAP?

If you answered yes to one or more of these, then yes!

Why choose Little Red Bird Publishing for this service?

I…

✔️Know the process inside and out and have gone through it many times, both for my own books and for my clients’ books
✔️Don’t take any royalties; your book is entirely yours and published under your name
✔️Guarantee your book gets published, live, and available for purchase within 1-6 months of coming to me with your first draft
✔️Offer competitive pricing with flexible payment plans
✔️Am an author too, so I understand what goes into putting your work out there
✔️Provide the service, insight, and publishing framework I wish I had when I was first starting out publishing my books
✔️Am as detail-focused as I am creative, and as friendly as I am professional
✔️Know how to get things done!

How long will it take to have my book published?

As fast as you like!

I can have it published for you in under a month, as long as you get back to me with confirmations on my work within a reasonable time. The fastest I’ve done it so far has been within two weeks of receiving the manuscript’s first draft. You can check out that book here, if you like.

I don’t have a full draft written yet. Can I still sign up for this service?

Yes, I can slot you in for a month in the future, whenever you anticipate you will have the draft done and sent to me by.

What if I want more story-level editing done on my book before it’s published, or coaching to write my manuscript?

Copy edits and proofreads are unlimited in this package, but a Manuscript Evaluation or Developmental Edit can also be added on

Developmental, content (structural), and line (stylistic) editing are not included but can be added on with an additional charge. If you are interested in a comprehensive story-level edit (Manuscript Evaluation or Developmental Edit) on your manuscript before having it published, see EDITING SERVICES for more details on these additional editing options.

See EDITING SERVICES for a Manuscript Evaluation or Developmental Edit

If you are interested in a content (structural), or line (stylistic) edit, that can be done as well. You can write that on the contact form when you fill that out under Is there anything else you would like me to know? and we can arrange for that.

If you would like help, guidance, and accountability with writing your first draft, see BOOK COACHING for how I can help with that.

See 1:1 BOOK COACHING for coaching you through writing your first draft

What is Trello and how is it used in this service?

Trello is a 4-in-1 in this case…

Trello is a useful project management tool that works for any type of project, workflow, or team. For this service, I have customized it to be used as a:

✔️Tracker – where I can mark your book’s progress and you can see how far your book is along the path to publishing
✔️Resource – where you can learn the steps involved in publishing your book
✔️Guide – where you can follow along as I full service everything out for you
✔️Communication hub – where you can have full access to me between calls and reach me at any point along the way with any questions or concerns

So you both do it all for me and also teach me how to do it?

That’s right. I list out all the steps in detail in a private Trello board that only you and I have access to, so you can see what I am doing and in what order. This will give you a better idea of how the process works. You can track your book’s progress and see what steps it’s on at all times as I do it all for you. So you get 2-in-1, both the Oz Behind the Curtain and Teach a Man to Fish

What if I don’t need everything that’s offered in the package? Can I customize it?

Yes, if the package doesn’t fit your needs, we can work out a personalized package for you. Fill out this intake form and let me know your specific needs and how I can best support you and we can go from there!
